AIDS stands for 'Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome'. Acquired means obtained, not heredity. Immune related to our immune system. Deficiency means a shortage. Syndrome means a disease or syndrome with a collection of symptoms, not a specific symptom. So AIDS means a collection of symptoms due to the lack or weakness of the immune system that formed after we were born.

AIDS is caused by a virus called HIV, or Human Immunodeficiency Virus. If you have HIV, your body will try to fight infections. We will make the immune system 'antibodies', specific molecules that attack HIV.
